Starting the 2013 Kayak Season

Today, March 4, was my first day of paddling this year. A thaw, then rain, and subsequently a hard freeze has temporarily glaciated the ski mountain. It will recover, but in the meantime I took advantage of this sunny day and paddled from 3rd Avenue pier to City Beach and back while temperatures evolved from 36 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Along the way I mostly saw buffleheads, but also a Western Grebe and a few coots. I didn't pass any pilings where the cormorants hang out.

The return trip was easier as my muscles started to remember this activity. The total distance was only about 4 nm at a relaxed pace just over 3 kt. I don't need to start the season with an injury triggered by overeagerness. It may be April before I get out regularly.

Looking toward the warmer weather, I have two trips planned:
  • SSTIKS - June 14 through 16
  • Broken Group Islands - July 22 through 26
